History
Clifton Hall stands on land first purchased in 1818 by retired sailor Captain William Sharp. He later commissioned architect Walter Scott to design the Clifton Park estate around 1840, with the hall believed to have been completed by 1845.
Like much of the surrounding area, the building’s early years were shaped by economic uncertainty. A national depression in the late 1840s saw frequent changes in occupancy, with historical census records offering only partial insight into its residents. By 1871, the property was home to Robert Curwen and his household, including servants, followed by Samuel Williams in 1881.
The building’s use shifted over time. By 1888 it had been put up for auction and is thought to have later served as a Baptist tabernacle. In 1923, it was sold and became a Masonic hall – a role it continues to serve today.
